• In the fall of 1968 the film True Grit was filmed in Ouray County, including some scenes in the city of Ouray and the nearby town of Ridgway and, possibly most notably, the interior of the Ouray County Court House.

• In Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged, the protagonist's secret hideaway was in a beautiful valley in the Rocky Mountains called Mulligan's Valley or "Galt's Gulch." Galt's Gulch was inspired by Ouray, where Rand found inspiration to complete the novel.

• In the well-known television series MacGyver, Ouray is the home of MacGyver's grandfather, Harry. The town and its surrounding area are used as the backdrop for the first-season episode, "Target MacGyver".

• Telluride native David Lavender related his experiences working at the Camp Bird Mine in the 1930s in his memoir One Man's West.

• Coors and Chevrolet have both filmed commercials in the area, particularly Twin Falls in Yankee Boy Basin (a great landmark to visit by the way!).

• Famous baseball pitcher Smoky Joe Wood was born in Kansas City but grew up in Ouray.

• The opening scene to the movie Over the Top with Sylvester Stallone runs straight through downtown Ouray.

The River’s Edge is Ouray’s Most Pet Friendly Hotel

The River's Edge Motel Lodge and Resort aims to be one of the most accommodating and family friendly Ouray Colorado Hotels in town. Our dedication to hospitality applies to your four-legged friends as well, which is why we’ve devised several policies that make us the most Pet Friendly Hotel in Ouray. Here’s a quick rundown:

Dogs are welcomed in most rooms with a pet fee of $10 per night per dog at the time of check in. If you sneak your pet into your room, you will be charged an automatic fee of $50.

Your dog may not be left unattended at any time, whether in your vehicle, room or outside – they must be on a leash at all times. This is ideal for your best friend, as they often suffer from separation anxiety when left alone in a strange environment.

We ask that you please pick up after your dog – otherwise you will be charged a $25 cleaning fee. We have a pet pick up bags conveniently available by the hot tub or at the front office, and you can walk your dog along the river’s edge or in the back of the hotel.  

Keep dogs off the beds, linens and furniture. If need be, we can provide you with coverings. If we find pet hair on the bedding or furniture you will be charged an automatic $25 laundry and cleaning fee.

If your dog has accident in the room, don't be embarrassed – just form us immediately and we will clean it up before the carpet stains. If you choose not to report an accident you will be charged a $100 cleaning fee, as it will lead to more difficult stains.
